Twelve migrants involved in crash on Egnatia motorway in Western Thrace
Twelve irregular migrants were involved in a road crash on the Egnatia motorway near the Mesti area of Meriç (Evros) in northeastern Greece, with those injured receiving treatment at hospitals in Gümülcine (Komotini) and Dedeağaç (Alexandroupolis).
The accident occurred when a van carrying the migrants collided with a private car carrying two occupants.
Injured taken to two hospitals
According to updated information, seven migrants—six men and one woman aged between 25 and 30—were admitted to the Sismanoglio General Hospital in Gümülcine with minor injuries. They are being treated in the hospital's surgical clinic.
A further six people, including five women and a man suspected of being the migrant smuggler, were transported by ambulance to the University General Hospital of Dedeağaç. Medical examinations indicated that none of them had sustained serious injuries.
Investigation underway
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the suspected migrant smuggling operation. No further details about the condition of the occupants of the private car were immediately available.
