Current situation in the sheep pox outbreak: 40,000 animals culled

Despite all preventive measures, the sheep pox outbreak continues to spread in the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.

Since the first case was recorded on August 20, the outbreak has affected 220 small ruminant farms in the region, leading to the culling of 40,000 animals.

As a result of the outbreak, a ban on slaughtering small ruminants has been imposed, causing negative economic impacts on the local community.

Nikos Fotinias, Director of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Veterinary Department, stated in an interview with ERT that the outbreak poses a severe threat to the livestock sector. He noted that the long-term effects could lead to a downgrade in the quality of dairy products to secondary standards.

Fotinias emphasized the importance of livestock farmers adhering to precautionary measures to prevent the further spread of the disease.
