Citizen Protection Min Chrysochoidis visits the region of Evros

The region of Evros and Greece in general are "an oasis of stability" at a time when the broader region "has particular problems, it has instability", Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis said during a press conference in Alexandroupolis, in the context of his visit there on Wednesday.

"Evros is safe and this safety will continue to exist at a time when there is mounting pressure from our surroundings," the minister underlined, adding: "We are, however, devoted to doing our duty, to serving the country's security, the security of the borders and of the Greeks."

Regarding the agenda of his visit to the outlying Greek region, Chrysochoidis said that a series of issues concerning the operation of the security services of the country were examined: "We are here to discuss with the police officers a series of issues that concern the Greek police and the local community."

In particular, he referred to the addition of another 150 border guards in the region - 100 in Rodopi and 50 in Kavala - as a secondary line of defence for controlling migration, as he said. He spoke of almost zero flows at the moment in the Evros, giving credit for "this very important result" to "the very good work that the services are doing to deal with human trafficking." He expressed the belief that "this effort that is being made will continue even longer, with greater results and greater benefits for the country and Greek society", while pointing out that since 2020, when the Evros crisis broke out, more than 1000 border guards have been hired in all prefectures of Thrace and Eastern Macedonia.

Xanthi Police Academy

The police academy in Xanthi in northern Greece will restart working after a 15-year hiatus with 150 trainee police officers, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysohoidis said during a tour in the western Thrace region on Wednesday.

Chrysochoidis inspected the premises of the reopening academy, which will be one of three police academies in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace with those of Komotini and Didymoticho. Referring to the three academies at an interview in Alexandroupolis earlier, the minister said they expected to have nearly 1,500 trainees in total.

The academy is "a promise by the prime minister and an obligation to Xanthi's society that becomes implemented," the minister said.

He was accompanied in the visit by Xanthi Deputy Spiros Tsiligiris and Xanthi Mayor Stratos Kontos.
