Century-old plane tree branch falls in Kozlukebir, disaster narrowly averted
A large branch from a centuries-old plane tree in the center of Kozlukebir village, Rhodope, broke off and fell for reasons yet unknown, narrowly avoiding what could have been a major tragedy.
At the time of the incident, several elderly villagers were sitting under the tree, but fortunately they were not on the side where the branch fell. Locals described the event as a near disaster: “God protected us—just seconds made the difference.”
The historic plane tree, a symbol of the village for generations, has long served as a gathering spot where residents enjoy coffee in the shade. The village school bus stop is also located next to the tree, raising concerns over safety.
Damage to Old Gendarmerie Post
The heavy branch struck the surrounding walls of the village’s old gendarmerie post, causing cracks and dislodging stones. While structural damage occurred, no serious injuries were reported.
Municipal Response
Municipal crews quickly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area to prevent residents from gathering beneath the tree. Other branches of the tree are being inspected, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the break.
Villagers Concerned
Residents emphasized both the symbolic and historical value of the tree, while also expressing safety concerns: “This tree is the symbol of our village, but now it poses a danger. Without proper maintenance, worse accidents could happen.”
Inspection Underway
Officials stated that expert teams will assess the tree’s health and, if necessary, carry out pruning or reinforcement to ensure safety.
