Ambassador Alexandros Alexandris, specialist in Greek-Turkish relations, has died
Alexandris, who was born in the Pera district of Istanbul, earned a doctorate from King's College in Greek-Turkish relations and minority issues in 1979, taught at McGill University for two years (1980-1982) among other academic appointments, and wrote extensively for professional journals.
He entered the diplomatic service in 1982 and served in Cyprus, at Greece's Permanent Representation at the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and as consul general in Toronto and Istanbul. He also served as director of the Service for Political Affairs of Thrace (based in Xanthi) until 2013, when he assumed the post of ambassador and Permanent Representative of Greece at the UN and International Organizations in Geneva until his retirement in 2016.
Ambassador Alexandris was also honored for his work by the presidents of Greece and Cyprus and by Bartholomew.
Condolences
In a separate message including biographical information, the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry expressed its "deepest sadness for (his) loss," in a statement, adding that the foreign minister, "as well as the entire political and administrative leadership of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, express their hearfelt condolences to his family and loved ones."
