Alternative road works begin after collapse on Gümülcine–Yanıköy route

The damaged road of the vertical axis, located between Kalfa junction and Yanıköy junction, has remained closed since mid-February 2026, disrupting traffic and raising safety concerns.

Traffic Disruptions and Safety Concerns
Since the collapse, traffic has been diverted through a secondary route via Kozluköy and Dereköy. However, the narrow and inadequate nature of this road has created risks for drivers and slowed down transportation.

The Gümülcine–Yanıköy route is considered strategically important, particularly for cross-border movement and regional economic activity.

Temporary Bypass Road to Restore Connectivity
To address the issue, authorities have initiated the construction of a bypass road that will temporarily reroute traffic around the collapsed road.

According to officials:

  • The alternative road will begin approximately 350 meters before the collapse point
  • It will reconnect to the main road around 150 meters after the დაზიანებული հատված
  • Construction work is already underway by the contracted company

Officials Emphasize Strategic Importance

Following an on-site inspection, Deputy Regional Governor Manolis Tapacas confirmed that works have officially started.

He stressed that the road is vital not only for traffic safety but also for border crossings and the local economy in Rodopi.

Timeline and Long-Term Plans
The temporary road is expected to be completed within two months, providing short-term relief for drivers and transport operators.

Meanwhile, technical assessments for a permanent solution are ongoing, with authorities planning a more comprehensive intervention to ensure long-term road safety.

Advisory for Drivers
Officials urge drivers to exercise caution while using the alternative routes, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid speeding until the situation is fully resolved.
