Ali Topal Mehmet talks about Şapçı cemetery water project to Millet
Ali Topal Mehmet, Deputy Mayor of Maronia Municipality responsible for Water and Sewerage Services, detailed the Şapçı Turkish Cemetery water network project to Millet newspaper amidst public discussions and critiques.
The project, aiming to transport drinking water to the district stadium and the western part of Şapçı, initially sparked controversy following opposition leader Dinos Haritopoulos’s critical press release. This was followed by statements from Şapçı Trustees' representative Cafer Hafız Mehmet, shared with the public through Millet.
To clarify the situation and prevent misinformation, Deputy Mayor Mehmet invited journalist Ramadan Molla to the project site. He explained that the outdated water pipeline running through the cemetery would be replaced with a new line outside its boundaries, along the sidewalk.
Emphasizing sensitivity towards cultural landmarks, Mehmet stated, “Our mosques, schools, and cemeteries are our red lines.”
Technical aspects of the project were also elaborated by Deputy Mayor Mustafa Şakir Hüseyin at the municipal office, ensuring transparency and proper public understanding of the initiative.
