Three beaches made accessible in Maronia-Sapes Municipality
Maronia-Sapes Municipality in the Rhodope regional unit has expanded its accessibility infrastructure by introducing new Sea Access systems at three public beaches, enabling people with disabilities and those with reduced mobility to enter the sea safely and independently.
The newly equipped beaches—Çınarlıdere, Taşlık and Hacılaraltı—now feature solar-powered sea access platforms, accessible parking spaces, wooden access pathways, adapted changing cabins and shower facilities designed to improve accessibility for all visitors.
With the addition of these facilities, and alongside the SeaTrac system already operating at Sazlıca Beach since last year, the municipality's four busiest beaches are now fully accessible. Municipal officials said the initiative reinforces Maronia-Sapes' commitment to becoming an inclusive and modern tourism destination.
Lifeguard services are provided daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Çınarlıdere, Hacılaraltı and Sazlıca beaches. Lifeguards have received training in operating the accessibility systems and are available to assist users, particularly those visiting without a companion.
To mark the completion of the project, Maronia-Sapes Mayor Apostolos Ioannou met with Alexandros Taxildaris, president of the "Perpato" ("I Walk") Association, and Maria Selvi, president of the Rodopi Association of Persons with Disabilities.
The meeting focused on evaluating the operation of the new systems and exchanging recommendations to further improve services for users.
Municipal officials stressed that cooperation with organizations representing people with disabilities is essential for developing lasting solutions that address real community needs, rather than implementing purely technical projects.
Maronia-Sapes Municipality said it will continue working to create barrier-free public spaces where everyone can equally enjoy the sea, the natural environment and the region's attractions. Officials emphasized that accessibility is not only an infrastructure investment but also a reflection of respect, equality and social responsibility.
