Renowned pediatric hematologist Prof. Dr. Ömer Devecioğlu passes away
Prof. Dr. Ömer Devecioğlu, one of the prominent scientists from Western Thrace and a leading figure in pediatric hematology and oncology, has passed away at his summer residence in the Maronia region of Greece.
According to reports, Devecioğlu, who spent the summer months in Maronia, became ill and collapsed while stepping onto his balcony in the morning. Emergency teams transported him first to Gümülcine State Hospital and later to Dedeağaç University Hospital, where he died despite medical efforts.
Born in Gümülcine in 1952, Prof. Dr. Ömer Devecioğlu completed his primary and secondary education in the city before graduating from the Faculty of Medicine at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
He continued his professional career in Türkiye, serving for many years as an academic at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. Devecioğlu made significant contributions to the fields of pediatrics, pediatric hematology and oncology, and most recently served as Head of Pediatric Hematology at Şişli Memorial Hospital in Istanbul.
Throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Devecioğlu held active roles in numerous national and international scientific organizations and contributed to the treatment of thousands of children. He was also a respected figure within the Turkish community of Western Thrace, supporting various civil society initiatives and serving as an advisor to the leadership of the Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association.
Married and a father of two children, Devecioğlu’s death has caused deep sorrow among his family, the medical community and the Turkish community of Western Thrace.
