Opposition group criticizes Topsidis administration over regional report
The Independent United Initiative (Anexartiti Enotiki Protovoulia) has criticized the two-and-a-half-year performance report presented by Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Governor Christodoulos Topsidis, arguing that official figures do not reflect the daily challenges faced by residents.
The opposition group said the administration's presentation focused on approved projects and millions of euros in funding, but claimed that many citizens continue to struggle with poverty, low productivity and economic uncertainty.
In its statement, the group argued that the region's challenges include population decline, the departure of young people and the loss of skilled professionals. It also questioned the gap between announced projects and their completion.
The Independent United Initiative also criticized the administration's record on civil protection, citing the devastating Meriç wildfire, increased flood risks and what it described as insufficient regional resilience measures.
On healthcare, the group pointed to continued difficulties in accessing specialized services, staff shortages and low public satisfaction. Regarding infrastructure, it said planned road and transport projects have not fully addressed the region's isolation.
"A region is not strong because it has a lot of money. It is strong when its people have a reason to stay, create and dream of their future here," the group said, accusing the administration of performing well on paper while residents continue to face neglect.
