Criticism over idle historic municipal building in Şapçı

The prolonged non-use of the historic municipal building in Sapes has sparked criticism from the local opposition in the Municipality of Maronia–Şapçı.

In a written statement, Dinos Haritopoulos, head of the municipality’s main opposition list, criticized the current administration for keeping the historic building closed for nearly two years, despite the completion of its restoration. The building has served the town since 1951.

Haritopoulos pointed out that municipal services continue to operate from the former tax office building, while the restored historic structure remains unused. He argued that consolidating all municipal services under one roof in the historic building would significantly improve efficiency and public access.

Warning Over Possible Loss of Local Services

The opposition leader further warned that the lack of action could have broader consequences. According to Haritopoulos, if the temporary municipal premises are transferred to another public institution, there is a real risk that essential public services could be removed from Sapes altogether.

He described the situation as a case of administrative negligence, stressing that the continued closure of a fully restored public building undermines both local heritage and effective governance.
