Rhodope tobacco growers optimistic about this year’s harvest but seek further support

Tobacco producers in the Rhodope region are reporting a more positive outlook for the 2026 cultivation season, while continuing to demand compensation for previous losses and stronger government support for the sector.

Sinan Ahmet, president of the Thrace Tobacco Producers Cooperative, said this year’s crop is developing better compared with previous years, with favorable weather conditions contributing to expectations of a stronger harvest.

Ahmet said producers are still awaiting compensation for damages caused in 2024 and 2025, mainly linked to drought-related losses. He noted that tobacco growers have repeatedly contacted relevant ministries and lawmakers but have not yet received a concrete response.

"Since then, tobacco has remained outside support programs, and we have continuously sent letters to ministries and everywhere else," Ahmet said, emphasizing that producers continue to seek recognition of their losses.

Despite past difficulties, Ahmet expressed optimism about this year’s production, estimating that output could exceed 3,000 tons if current conditions continue. He also predicted that tobacco prices could be higher than last year if no unexpected problems occur.

Highlighting the importance of tobacco cultivation for the region, Ahmet described the crop as a traditional product closely connected to Rhodope’s economic and cultural identity. He said efforts are underway to prepare a file seeking recognition of tobacco as a regional product.

Ahmet also called for greater support for small-scale farmers, warning that younger generations will not enter the sector unless they see a sustainable future. He said most tobacco producers in the region are small farmers who often struggle to access available financial support programs.

According to Ahmet, around 15,000 people in Rhodope and Thrace are connected to tobacco production, with approximately 25,000 acres of land used for cultivation. He estimated that the sector brings around €25 million into the local economy.

The president of the cooperative said efforts will continue to secure solutions for producers, adding that the organization is prepared to continue its advocacy with state authorities.
