A major leadership shake-up is looming within Greece’s New Left party, as its leader Alexis Haritsis is expected to resign later today, according to party sources.

The anticipated resignation is set to be discussed during a political bureau meeting and is widely seen as an effort to ease rising internal tensions and prevent further fragmentation within the party.

According to a report by Nikos Papadimitriou in Efimerida ton Syntakton, Haritsis is likely to step down “unless there is a last-minute development,” signaling a decisive move to stabilize the party during a period of growing uncertainty.

Interim Leadership and Congress Timeline
Under party statutes, Secretary General Gavriil Sakellaridis is expected to assume interim leadership. He is anticipated to convene the Central Committee in the coming days and initiate procedures for a leadership congress, which must be held by June 2026 at the latest.

Shifting Alliances on the Greek Left
The leadership transition comes amid broader political realignments in Greece’s left-wing spectrum. A potential new political initiative reportedly being prepared by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras could significantly reshape the balance of power among progressive forces.

Within New Left’s parliamentary group, differing political tendencies are becoming increasingly visible, with some members reportedly exploring closer alignment with Tsipras’ emerging political direction.

Calls for Broad Progressive Cooperation
Party spokesperson Efi Achtsioglou emphasized the need for a broad-based alliance to achieve political change in Greece. She highlighted key policy areas—including the cost-of-living crisis, economic governance, the welfare state, and foreign policy—as priorities requiring a unified progressive agenda.

Minority MPs Remain Part of Parliamentary Group
New Left continues to be represented in the Greek Parliament by MPs including Hüseyin Zeybek from İskeçe and Özgür Ferhat from Rhodope.

A Turning Point in Greek Politics
The unfolding developments within New Left are widely viewed as a potential turning point in Greek politics, signaling further fragmentation—but also possible recomposition—of the country’s progressive political landscape.
