The Veterinary Directorate of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has announced the culling of 32,000 small ruminants following a severe outbreak of sheep and goat pox in the region.

Veterinary Director Nikos Fotinias revealed during a televised interview that Rhodope has been the most affected area by the disease. He emphasized the critical role of livestock handlers in preventing the spread of the infection, urging farmers to adhere strictly to hygiene protocols.

Fotinias also reassured farmers that compensation for the culled animals will be distributed by the end of December 2024, providing some relief to those impacted by the outbreak.

This outbreak underscores the importance of biosecurity measures in animal husbandry to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases in the region.
