Samaras hints at new political party

Former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras reignited political speculation with a speech delivered on the evening of Tuesday, June 17, at the War Museum in Athens. His closing remarks—emphasizing “responsibility” and “hope”—have been interpreted as signals of a potential new political formation.

In the final part of his nearly 3,000-word speech, Samaras delivered pointed messages, stating:

“They would prefer I remain silent, but that is not the duty of a former prime minister. I will continue to speak out for my country. This is a matter of responsibility.”

Concluding with the words:

“We are many, and we are standing. This word—responsibility—gives rise to another great word: hope,”
Samaras indirectly criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the Maximos Mansion (the official seat of the Prime Minister).

Split from the Party
Samaras was expelled from the New Democracy Party (NDP) in the autumn of 2024 following disagreements with party leadership during the summer. Since then, he has remained outspoken, consistently making public statements to assert his political stance.

Sources within NDP acknowledge that Samaras’s positions continue to resonate with the party’s traditional base, suggesting that a new political movement led by him could gain traction. However, circles close to the Prime Minister argue that his remarks are damaging to the party.

Rumors of a New Political Movement
Political insiders claim that figures close to Samaras have been engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions regarding a new political initiative. Although Samaras has not explicitly declared intentions to form a new party, his reluctance to rule it out keeps speculation alive.
