Maria Karystianou, a prominent victims’ rights advocate in Greece, has announced the creation of a new political movement, marking her formal entry into national politics.

Karystianou, former head of a victims’ association, revealed her plans on the birthday of her late daughter Marthi, who died in the Tempi train crash—a tragedy that continues to shape public debate on accountability and safety reforms in the country.

“We Begin for Hope”

In a statement shared on social media, Karystianou introduced the movement under the slogan “We Begin for Hope”, adding that the official name of the party will be unveiled in the coming days.

“Silence is heavier than injustice. That is why we chose to speak,” she said. “It is not easy, but it is the only way to stand firm and keep hope alive. Our movement is a beacon of justice, truth, and dignity.”

Grassroots Vision and Inclusive Platform

Through the movement’s website, Karystianou outlined a vision centered on grassroots participation, independence, and social solidarity. The initiative aims to unite citizens from diverse backgrounds—across age groups, professions, and life experiences—around a shared goal of building a fairer society.

She emphasized that the movement is not merely a political project, but a broad civic platform committed to addressing social inequality, strengthening collective responsibility, and prioritizing public welfare over individual gain.

Symbolism in Launch Video

The movement’s first promotional video features a white dove carrying a golden olive branch, breaking through an hourglass and flying out of a window—imagery symbolizing freedom, justice, and renewed hope.

The visuals, Karystianou noted, are intended to reinforce the movement’s core message: a call for accountability and a forward-looking vision for Greece.

A Movement Born from Tragedy

Karystianou’s political step reflects a broader trend of civic mobilization following the Tempi disaster, which triggered widespread protests and demands for systemic reform.

Her initiative is expected to resonate with citizens seeking greater transparency, justice, and institutional trust in Greece’s political system.
