Survey suggests Karystianou-led party would draw mainly protest vote
A new opinion poll by GPO indicates that a potential political party led by Maria Karystianou would draw the bulk of its support from protest and anti-establishment voters, with minimal impact on the ruling New Democracy party and the main opposition PASOK.
Karystianou is the president of the association representing the families of victims of the 2023 Tempe rail disaster.
According to the survey, 63.4% of voters of the ultra-Orthodox nationalist Niki party said it would be “very” or “quite” likely they would support a Karystianou-led party. The figure stands at 52.8% among supporters of the populist Course of Freedom and 36.7% among voters of the far-right Greek Solution.
Lower, though still significant, levels of potential support were recorded among voters of established opposition parties, including the left-wing SYRIZA at 26.8%, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) at 25%, and the anti-immigration Voice of Reason at 23.4%.
By contrast, the poll points to limited willingness among voters of the country’s traditional governing parties to back such a move. Just 10% of New Democracy supporters said they would be “very” or “quite” likely to vote for a Karystianou-led party, compared with 15.8% among PASOK voters.
The survey was conducted by GPO for Parapolitika radio station.
