Political tensions are rising in Greece after a subtle but symbolic move by a lawmaker closely associated with Antonis Samaras sparked fresh speculation about a potential party split.
Greece signals political tremor as Samaras ally alters signature

Miltos Hrisomallis, a member of the ruling New Democracy (ND) and a known ally of Samaras, drew attention after signing his Easter message without referencing his party affiliation. Instead of the customary “New Democracy MP,” Hrisomallis identified himself simply as “MP for Messinia.”

The message, published in a local newspaper in the Messinia region, was widely interpreted by political observers as a deliberate signal of distancing from the ruling party.

Growing Speculation of a New Political Movement
The development comes amid renewed rumors that Samaras is preparing to launch a new political party, potentially reshaping Greece’s conservative landscape. According to political insiders, several MPs aligned with the former prime minister are increasingly positioning themselves outside the core of the current government.

Sources suggest that Samaras is unlikely to directly recruit sitting ND lawmakers into a new party structure. Instead, those wishing to align with him may be required to resign from parliament or wait for the next electoral cycle.

Symbolic Absences Fuel Rumors
Recent public appearances—or the lack thereof—have further intensified speculation. Samaras reportedly spent the Easter holiday in Pylos, breaking from his usual tradition of attending public events in Kalamata.

Similarly, Hrisomallis and another Samaras-aligned figure, Periklis Mantas, remained largely out of public view during the period. In contrast, Giannis Lampropoulos—known for his proximity to the current government—maintained a visible public presence.

Potential Impact on Greek Politics
Taken together, these developments are being read as early indicators of fragmentation within Greece’s right-wing bloc. Analysts suggest that a new party led by Samaras could significantly alter voter alignments, particularly among conservative constituencies dissatisfied with the current leadership.
