Political tension in Greece: SYRIZA calls for Deputy Energy Minister Tsafos’ resignation over "TRNC" remark

Greek opposition party SYRIZA has called for the resignation of Deputy Energy Minister Nikos Tsafos, following revelations that he had previously referred to the Turkish-administered northern part of Cyprus as the "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" (TRNC).
SYRIZA spokesperson Yorgos Karameros condemned the statement, calling it a scandal and demanding immediate action. Speaking to ERT television, Karameros emphasized:
“Nikos Tsafos may be a respected figure in the scientific community, but he previously referred to the occupied territories as the 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.' When confronted, he dismissed it as a statement made during his time as an analyst in the U.S., claiming he had no ties to the Greek government at the time. However, now that he holds a ministerial position, such remarks are unacceptable.”
"He Must Resign Immediately"
Karameros further criticized Tsafos’ role in energy diplomacy, stating:
“Someone who refers to the occupied areas as the ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ cannot be trusted to negotiate energy matters involving Türkiye, Cyprus, and Israel. He must apologize and step down immediately.”
Additionally, Karameros criticized the government for not appointing a minister from Eastern Macedonia or Thrace, arguing that Tsafos' stance undermines national interests.
Tsafos Defends Himself
Following the backlash, Nikos Tsafos responded, clarifying that his remarks were made while he was working as an analyst in the United States, at a time when he had no affiliation with the Greek government.
However, SYRIZA remains firm in its demand for his resignation, insisting that his explanation is insufficient and that he is no longer fit to serve in the Greek government.
The controversy has sparked debate within Greek political circles, particularly regarding Greece’s stance on Cyprus and its diplomatic relations with Türkiye.
