Gerovasili leaves Syriza as independent lawmaker

A significant shift has emerged in Greece’s opposition ranks after Olga Gerovasili announced her departure from Syriza and declared herself an independent lawmaker.

Gerovasili formally notified Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis of her decision in a letter submitted Tuesday.

Her departure reduces Syriza’s representation in Parliament to 11 lawmakers, while the number of independent MPs rises to 52.

New pressure on opposition

Gerovasili has been a prominent figure in Greek politics and one of Syriza’s better-known lawmakers.

Her decision is expected to fuel further debate over Syriza’s position in Parliament and the balance of power within Greece’s opposition.

The loss of another lawmaker also raises fresh questions about Syriza’s parliamentary influence and its ability to maintain its role as a leading opposition force.
