Movement for Democracy Party sets February congress to determine next steps
Confronted with weak polling numbers and financial constraints, Movement for Democracy party leader Stefanos Kasselakis announced that he will convene an extraordinary party congress in February to determine the party’s future direction.
In a social media post on Sunday evening, Kasselakis—who founded the party in November 2024 after a brief and turbulent tenure as leader of the left-wing SYRIZA party, which ended with his effective removal—said Greece needs “a pro-European, liberal and progressive political force” capable of delivering sound economic policy and the “radical institutional renewal that society demands.”
“Unfortunately, it seems that there is currently no viable space for such a new force for change to assume a leading role,” he wrote.
Kasselakis, a former associate at Goldman Sachs, said the extraordinary congress will take place on February 7–8.
“At the congress, we will jointly decide whether and how the Movement for Democracy will continue—examining its constitutional reorganization, financial sustainability, and prospects for governing,” he added.
