MP Alexandros Avlonitis announced on Thursday that he has left the Movement for Democracy, citing growing ideological differences with the party’s leadership.
In a social media post, the Corfu lawmaker said disagreements with party leader Stefanos Kasselakis had evolved into “structural differences,” adding he could no longer support what he described as a leader-centered party lacking clear political direction.
Avlonitis’ departure reduces the party’s representation in the 300-seat parliament to four seats.
The Movement for Democracy was founded by Kasselakis in the fall of 2024 following his removal as leader of leftist SYRIZA.
