Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his nomination of Parliament Speaker Konstantinos Tasoulas for Greek president in a prerecorded address on Wednesday.

Mitsotakis highlighted Tasoulas’ unifying leadership, noting his repeated election as speaker with wide parliamentary support.

“The broad acceptance of Mr. Tasoulas stems from the fact that he has been elected speaker of the Hellenic Parliament three times with the strongest majorities in the post-dictatorship era: 283, 270, and 249 votes,” Mitsotakis stated.

He also addressed his decision to break with tradition by nominating someone from the governing majority, arguing that the key criterion is public trust. “Neither the different backgrounds of a president and a prime minister guarantee institutional balance, nor does their political alignment inherently create risks for the state,” he remarked.

Mitsotakis also expressed gratitude to outgoing President Katerina Sakellaropoulou for her term, praising her for humanizing the presidency. However, he added that the country now requires a president with “a long-standing public service record and clear political attributes.”

In addition, Mitsotakis proposed a constitutional change to limit the President of the Hellenic Republic to a single six-year term, stating his intention to bring this forward during the next constitutional revision.

The parliament is expected to vote on the new president within ten days.

As for Tasoulas’ successor, three New Democracy MPs are reportedly under consideration: Nikitas Kaklamanis, Kostas Tsiaras and Theodoros Roussopoulos. Meanwhile, George Amyras, the first runner-up from the Ioannina electoral district, will assume Tasoulas’ seat in the New Democracy parliamentary group.
