Bekiris steps aside as questions over appointment remain unanswered

Michalis Bekiris has temporarily stepped down as director of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ office in parliament, saying he will remain away from his duties until the legal investigation into the case is concluded.

His decision follows revelations by the newspaper Documento that raised questions about his official appointment and academic qualifications. The issues have remained unanswered despite repeated calls from opposition parties for clarification.

In a statement, Bekiris described his departure as a personal decision, stressing that it did not constitute a retreat or an admission of wrongdoing. He said he had been subjected to an unprecedented campaign of personal targeting and vowed to pursue the matter through the courts.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis had referred questions to Bekiris’ own statements and indicated that legal action was expected.

Opposition demands answers

Opposition parties argued that Bekiris’ temporary departure does not resolve the questions surrounding his appointment.

PASOK questioned whether an official appointment had been published in the government gazette and whether Bekiris held the required degree. SYRIZA also called on Mitsotakis to explain the circumstances behind his selection.

The opposition further raised questions about the legal framework governing Bekiris’ role, his remuneration and the oversight of his responsibilities.

The government has not provided detailed answers to these questions in the statements cited in the reports.

New deputy spokespersons appointed

Separately, New Democracy has appointed four deputy press spokespersons: Porfylenia Kanellopoulou, Odysseas Nasibian, Christos Lagkadianos and Paola Damianou.

Party spokesperson Alexandra Sdoukou will coordinate the team, according to an announcement from the ruling party’s press office.

New Democracy said the appointments aim to strengthen its public presence and improve communication of the party’s positions and initiatives.

The four appointees have backgrounds in law, political communication, local government and party organizations.
