Greek Orthodox Priest accused of raising €1.3 million in fake bishop bid

A 70-year-old Greek Orthodox priest went on trial in Thessaloniki on Thursday, accused of defrauding members of his congregation of at least €1.3 million in donations.

The cleric, who previously served at the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, allegedly collected money between 2018 and 2023, claiming it would support his bid to become metropolitan bishop of Thessaloniki. Authorities say the funds were solicited from parishioners under false pretenses. The priest has been suspended from his duties and remains in custody pending the outcome of the trial.

A 63-year-old former priest and two lay associates are also facing charges in connection with the case.

During Thursday’s hearing, one member of the congregation testified that he gave the defendant €200,000 to support his campaign, believing he would be repaid once the priest secured the bishop’s position. The witness also stated that he had been promised a senior administrative role in the local church if the defendant were elected.
