It was revealed that the criminal network mostly targeted elderly women, deceiving them into believing that their close relatives had been involved in a traffic accident and that they had to pay large sums of money for alleged surgeries and other medical expenses.

The 47-year-old Bulgarian citizen, who was arrested and sentenced to 8 years in prison, is said to have earned about 280,000 euros for the criminal network of which he was apparently a member. The arrested fraudster was found guilty of eight fraud offences and sentenced to 8 years in prison.

According to media reports, most of the frauds took place in Thessaloniki in 2019. The Bulgarian fraudster was implicated in these incidents only four years later, after another fraud attempt, to which he confessed.

The fraudster woman admitted in court that she participated in the phone calls. She denied the accusations that she was aware of the fraud. It was recorded that the cash and valuables she collected from the people she defrauded were deposited in Bulgaria and given to loan sharks in return for gambling debts.

The head of the gang responsible for the stolen cash and valuables in Bulgaria is still wanted by the police.
