Greek police warn of fake SMS messages impersonating gov.gr

The Hellenic Police have issued a warning over a recent scam involving fake SMS messages that impersonate official gov.gr communications and falsely claim that recipients have a traffic violation or outstanding traffic fine.

According to the police, the fraudulent messages direct recipients to a link that leads to a fake website designed to resemble an official government service. The website then attempts to collect sensitive personal and financial information.

The scam messages reportedly ask users to click on a link to address an alleged traffic violation or fine associated with their vehicle.

FAKE WEBSITES SEEK PERSONAL AND BANKING DETAILS
Once users follow the link, they are redirected away from the official gov.gr platform to a fraudulent website. According to the police warning, the fake site may request personal information, vehicle registration details and banking or credit card information.

The authorities stressed that such messages should not be treated as legitimate government communications.

POLICE: DO NOT CLICK ON LINKS SENT BY SMS
Greek police urged citizens not to click on suspicious links received through SMS and emphasized that gov.gr does not send citizens links via SMS for this type of procedure.

Instead, anyone who needs to check a traffic violation, make a payment or complete another government transaction should manually access the official gov.gr website and carry out the process there.

Authorities also advised citizens not to provide personal, vehicle or banking information through links contained in suspicious messages and to disregard messages that appear to be part of this scam.
