Greece synchronizes digital driving licenses with traffic police via gov.gr wallet
Greece has officially reformed the way digital driving licenses function through the Gov.gr Wallet, closing a long-standing loophole that allowed drivers to display a digital license even after their physical license had been confiscated by traffic police.
With the latest update to the Gov.gr Wallet application, any driving license suspension imposed by the Traffic Police is now automatically synchronized with government digital systems. As a result, once a license is revoked, the digital version is immediately removed from the driver’s mobile wallet and cannot be used during roadside checks.
Ending a Critical Legal Gap
Until now, drivers whose physical licenses were seized could still present a valid-looking digital license stored on their smartphones. This gap created opportunities for misuse and deception during traffic inspections, despite the driver having no legal right to operate a vehicle.
The new interoperability between the Traffic Police and Gov.gr systems ensures real-time updates, making the digital driving license fully aligned with its actual legal status.
Strengthening Digital Trust and Road Safety
Greek authorities emphasize that this reform aims to:
- Enhance the credibility of digital public documents
- Prevent abuse of digital identification tools
- Improve road safety and law enforcement efficiency
This move marks another step in Greece’s broader digital governance strategy, reinforcing trust in state-issued digital services while ensuring that penalties imposed on traffic violations are effectively enforced.
