Greek consumers prioritize value and personalization
Only 25% of Greek consumers are optimistic about their personal financial future, the lowest share among the European markets surveyed, while demand for value for money, environmental responsibility and personalized products continues to shape purchasing decisions, according to NielsenIQ’s Consumer Life Global 2026 survey.
Greece is participating in the international survey for the first time this year, alongside 38 other markets. The findings reveal consumers balancing financial caution with expectations for better products, tailored experiences and more responsible business practices.
Although 60% of Greek consumers consider good value for money an important brand attribute, 48% place similar importance on price, suggesting that purchasing decisions extend beyond simply choosing the cheapest option.
Environmental concerns do not always influence purchases
Environmental responsibility is another major priority, with 58% of Greek respondents saying businesses should operate in an environmentally responsible manner.
Concern about environmental issues is widespread: 85% expressed concern about pollution, while 78% were worried about climate change.
However, these concerns do not always translate into purchasing choices. Only 34% said they consider environmental factors when buying products. Meanwhile, 52% consider environmentally friendly options too expensive, and 31% question their effectiveness.
The findings point to a challenge for businesses seeking to attract environmentally conscious consumers while keeping products affordable and demonstrating their practical benefits.
Demand grows for personalized experiences
Consumers are also increasingly interested in products and experiences tailored to their individual preferences. According to the survey, 54% of Greeks prefer products that can be customized to meet their needs, while 50% consider regularly treating or rewarding themselves important.
Artificial intelligence is expected to accelerate this trend. Some 78% of respondents believe AI will make online shopping more personalized, while 34% of AI users in Greece have already used the technology to obtain shopping recommendations.
Yet attitudes toward AI remain divided. While 77% believe it will improve many aspects of life, 83% expect it to eliminate jobs, highlighting the coexistence of optimism about technological progress and concerns over its consequences.
Sustainability and individuality lead consumer trends
NIQ’s TrendKey 2026 Greece report identifies nine major trends influencing consumer attitudes and purchasing decisions through social, technological, economic, environmental and political changes.
The two strongest trends in Greece are Eco-Conscience, accounting for 24.4%, and All about Me, at 24.1%.
They are followed by Experience Above All, Discerning Consumption, In the Know, Frictionless Living, Sense of Wellbeing, Belonging and Seeking Safety.
The leading trends reflect two parallel expectations: consumers want businesses to demonstrate greater environmental responsibility while also offering products and services that address their individual needs.
Businesses face challenge of adapting to changing priorities
For businesses, the findings highlight the importance of understanding not only what consumers are changing but also the reasons behind those changes.
Systematic analysis of consumer trends can help companies identify emerging opportunities, plan for the long term, refine their communication strategies and better understand their target audiences.
The challenge for companies operating in Greece will be to reconcile financial constraints with growing expectations for sustainability, personalization and convenient shopping experiences, while distinguishing lasting changes in consumer behaviour from temporary trends.
