IELKA: Greek supermarket basket prices lower than in other European countries

According to IELKA’s January 2026 price comparison study, supermarket prices in Greece were lower than in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Romania and Bulgaria.

The survey compared prices in 40 product categories, drawing on more than 6,000 individual product prices from 48 supermarket chains across the eight countries. Both branded and private-label products were included. The analysis was conducted using data from supermarket chains and reliable price comparison platforms, and examined prices both with and without VAT, which varies by country.

The findings show that the average household basket was more expensive in all other countries surveyed compared to Greece. Germany recorded prices 35% higher than Greece, France 34%, the United Kingdom 23%, Romania 17%, Italy 14%, Spain 12%, Bulgaria 7% and Portugal 5%.

IELKA noted that the comparison αφορά supermarket chains exclusively and does not include other retail outlets.
