Greek opposition urges legal recognition of “femicide”

Opposition parties in Greece have called on the government to legally recognize “femicide” as a distinct crime, following the killing of a 36-year-old woman in Volos by her husband in front of their child.

In a written statement, the opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) said expressions of sorrow, awareness campaigns, and measures such as the panic button app were not enough:
"What is truly needed is the real protection of women, sufficient staffing of police units against domestic violence, and more funding and personnel for shelters hosting abused women," the statement read.

SYRIZA stressed that the concept of “femicide” must be legally enshrined.

The opposition New Left Party issued a similar statement, declaring: “The concept of femicide must be legally recognized without any delay.”

The party underlined that words alone are insufficient and called for immediate political will and institutional action to protect women from gender-based violence.
