Greece expands Balkan outreach: Selanik-led delegation heads to Bucharest for third mission stop
Greece is set to deepen its economic and institutional ties in Southeast Europe as the Ministry of Interior (Macedonia and Thrace) prepares for the third stop of its Balkan outreach initiative, this time in the Romanian capital.
The mission, scheduled for May 25–26, is organized in cooperation with the Embassy of Greece in Bucharest and will bring together a broad delegation of business leaders, regional authorities, and academic institutions from Northern Greece.
The delegation will be led by Deputy Interior Minister for Macedonia and Thrace Konstantinos P. Gkioulekas and includes representatives from major economic and institutional bodies such as Enterprise Greece, Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV), and SEVE.
Strong Institutional and Business Participation
The mission will also feature participation from chambers of commerce, regional authorities across Macedonia and Thrace, and five universities from the region. Technology and innovation stakeholders—including the Thessaloniki ICT Association and Alexandria Innovation Zone—are also expected to take part.
A key component of the visit will be port-to-port cooperation talks, with representatives from Northern Greece’s major ports—Selanik, Kavala, and Dedeağaç—engaging with Romanian port authorities that have expressed strong interest in bilateral partnerships.
Focus on Trade, Innovation, and Connectivity
The Bucharest leg follows previous missions to Sofia and Belgrade, forming part of a broader strategy to enhance Greece’s regional footprint through economic diplomacy.
During the visit, Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed between Greek and Romanian institutions, aiming to foster cooperation in trade, logistics, academia, and innovation.
In addition, B2B (business-to-business) meetings will be held between Greek and Romanian companies, providing a platform for direct partnerships and investment opportunities.
Strategic Regional Engagement
Officials say the outreach campaign is designed to strengthen communication channels, promote cross-border synergies, and expand economic cooperation between Northern Greece and Balkan countries.
The initiative reflects Greece’s growing emphasis on regional diplomacy and economic integration, positioning Macedonia and Thrace as key gateways for trade and collaboration in Southeast Europe.
