Ilias Kasidiaris released from Domokos prison after serving his sentence
Former MP Ilias Kasidiaris was released from Domokos Prison at noon on Tuesday after serving the lengthy sentence imposed on him for his actions as the 'first lieutenant' within the criminal organisation Golden Dawn, a neo-nazi group that had entered Parliament at the height of the Greek crisis.
As he left, he was cheered and clapped by supporters who had gathered outside the prison to greet him.
After his release, Kasidiaris made the following statement to reporters:
"I had given you a promise that as soon as I pass through this gate I would not only return to freedom but also to the front line of the national struggle. Today I return and I am not alone, I have with me a new, strong national party, like those that are dominant across Europe.
"My aim is to rid the country of the most corrupt government of the post-dictatorship era. I see the politicians on television, how they whine and conspire and say that they must not allow me to return to Parliament. It is not their decision. In a democracy, however, there is one judge, the sovereign people - you, the thinking Greek citizens."
