Far-right MP says he will represent new party linked with Kasidiaris
An independent lawmaker first elected with the far-right Spartans party said Monday that he would represent the new Alliance of Greeks far-right group linked with a recently released ex-lawmaker for the now-defunct, Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn party.
Georgios Manoussos said that while formally an independent lawmaker, he “effectively represents” the Alliance of Greeks. His comments caused angry protests from left-wing lawmakers in the house.
Earlier Monday, former Golden Dawn lawmaker Ilias Kasidiaris, who was released last week after serving part of a 13-year sentence for leading a criminal organization, announced his support for Alliance of Greeks.
In a 3½-minute video posted on YouTube, Kasidiaris said the party had been established in 2025, that its charter had been submitted to the Supreme Court and that it already had an active parliamentary group.
Kasidiaris said the party adheres to democratic principles and aims to fight corruption, poverty and the housing crisis.
The new party is linked to three independent lawmakers elected with the Spartans in 2023: Manousos, Giannis Dimitrokallis and Dionysis Valtogiannis. The three had reportedly submitted an application to the Supreme Court to establish the party. Judicial sources, however, told Kathimerini that they had no record of such an application.
Under Greek electoral law, the Supreme Court can examine whether a party is effectively led by someone convicted of leading a criminal organization, even if that person does not formally hold a leadership position.
The provision was used in 2023 to bar Kasidiaris’ National Party-Greeks from the election after the court determined that he was its real leader. The court later found that Kasidiaris was also the real leader of the Spartans, leading to the annulment of the election of three of its lawmakers in 2025.
Kasidiaris was released after serving part of his 13-year sentence, which is due to run until 2033. Legal experts have differed over the extent to which the restrictions arising from his conviction affect his ability to participate in elections, particularly whether they would also prevent him from running as an independent candidate.
Kasidiaris did not say in the video whether he will personally seek election through the new party.
