Supreme Court Prosecutor's Office appeals against ruling for the release of Giotopoulos
The Office of the Supreme Court Prosecutor has officially proposed that a decision leading to the release of convicted terrorist Alexandros Giotopoulos, who was sentenced to 17 life sentences for his role within the terrorist organization November 17, be rescinded.
More specifically, Supreme Court Deputy Prosecutor Sofoklis Logothetis, after reviewing the case file, concluded that the mastermind behind the November 17 murders should not have been released because he had not served the full length of the sentence required by law, which allows a maximum of 25 years in prison, irrespective of the length of the sentence.
The appeal to rescind was also filed because, according to Logothetis, substantive criteria for release have not been met, as there has been no meaningful change in the factors considered in the judicial ruling.
Following these developments, the President of the Supreme Court, Anastasia Papadopoulou, is expected to appoint a judicial council promptly in order to examine the prosecutor’s proposal. If the proposal is accepted, Giotopoulos will return to prison.
The judicial council of the Supreme Court is expected to convene during the first 10 days of June.
