Far-right lawmaker convicted of assault on fellow MP
An Athens court on Monday convicted a far-right lawmaker of physically assaulting a fellow MP in Parliament and handed him a suspended sentence of four years in prison.
Constantinos Floros, an independent lawmaker elected with the Spartans party, was found guilty of violently attacking Vassilis Grammenos from the populist right-wing Greek Solution party on April 24, 2024.
Floros was allowed to walk free pending the hearing of his appeal, and was ordered to pay €1.600 court costs.
The prosecution had earlier called for Floros to be given a five-year sentence for hitting Grammenos and knocking him to the ground outside the session hall in the Parliament building.
Addressing the court, Floros declined to apologize to Grammenos, arguing that he couldn’t do so in person due to a court restraining order.
He described the assault as an “erroneous reaction” of his to Grammenos allegedly speaking insultingly of Floros’ mother.
“I acted in reaction to what I heard about my mother,” he said. “My reaction was wrong … I know that if I should apologize to someone that would have been to my mother had I not defended her at the time.”
