Ilias Kasidiaris, a jailed former lawmaker and spokesperson for the now-defunct Golden Dawn party, said Thursday he intends to form a new political party upon his release from prison.

Kasidiaris, 45, is serving a 13.5-year sentence for involvement in the criminal activities of Golden Dawn, which a Greek court ruled was a criminal organization operating under the guise of a political party.

He made the announcement during the presentation of his latest book in Athens, titled “The Black Bible of the Political System,” and in a video posted on social media.

In the video, Kasidiaris asked an audience at the event whether they wanted to see him return to politics. The crowd responded in approval.

“I pledge before you that the very first thing I will do once I set foot outside prison – even with just one foot out – will be to make a strong return to the center of Greece’s political activity,” he said.

He later shared the exchange on the social media platform X, under the caption: “I am making a strong return with a new party.”

Kasidiaris was convicted in October 2020 in a landmark trial that found Golden Dawn operated as a paramilitary criminal organization. While he was not convicted in the 2013 killing of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, the court held that senior party members were responsible for directing an organization linked to that and other violent attacks against migrants and political opponents.

He has filed multiple requests for conditional release in recent years. Some former associates have been released under strict conditions, though Kasidiaris remains incarcerated amid ongoing legal debate over his continued political activity from prison.
