Prosecutor recommends conditional release for former Golden Dawn MP Kasidiaris
A Greek appeals court prosecutor has recommended the conditional release of Ilias Kasidiaris, the former MP and convicted member of the neo-Nazi criminal group Golden Dawn, citing legal eligibility and good behavior while incarcerated.
Kasidiaris, 44, was sentenced in 2020 to 13 years in prison for his leadership role in Golden Dawn, which was found guilty of operating as a criminal organization responsible for violent attacks, including fatal assaults on migrants and left-wing activists.
According to judicial sources, the prosecutor noted that Kasidiaris has served the mandatory portion of his sentence and has committed no disciplinary violations during his time in prison.
If the request is granted, Kasidiaris would be released under strict conditions, including a ban on international travel and a requirement to report regularly to local police.
The final decision will be made by the competent judicial council.
After Golden Dawn's collapse, Kasidiaris founded the National Party–Greeks in 2020. Though the party was barred from participating in the 2023 national elections, Kasidiaris voiced his support for the Spartans party, which later faced legal setbacks. Earlier this month, Greece’s Special Highest Court annulled the election of three Spartan MPs, including their leader, citing electoral fraud and confirming that Kasidiaris was the de facto leader of the group.
