Appeals Prosecutor calls for guilty verdicts for all Golden Dawn defendants
The prosecutor at Greece’s criminal appeals court on Wednesday called for all 42 defendants in the Golden Dawn case to be found guilty, upholding the convictions handed down by the first-instance court.
Wrapping up a four-day address, Prosecutor Kyriaki Stefanatou proposed that all defendants be convicted on the charges brought against them, including running or participating in a criminal organization, the murder of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, and the attempted murder of Egyptian fishermen.
According to AMNA, Stefanatou said the evidence showed that Golden Dawn’s leadership, including founder and former party leader Nikos Michaloliakos, had full knowledge of and control over the group’s criminal activities, while openly promoting a neo-Nazi ideology and rejecting democratic principles.
Those tried at the appeals level include seven senior Golden Dawn figures convicted of running a criminal organization, 11 former lawmakers convicted of membership — among them Michaloliakos’ wife, Eleni Zaroulia — and 24 defendants charged in connection with Fyssas’ murder and the attack on the fishermen.
The appeals court is expected to rule at a later date.
