Türkiye’s influence in the Balkans draws attention in Greece

According to the Greek newspaper, Türkiye continues to strengthen its presence in the Balkans through investments, cultural engagement and support for Turkish communities, extending its outreach beyond areas where Turkish minorities are officially recognized.

The report examines Türkiye’s role in Greece, Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia, pointing to the political influence of Turkish communities in countries such as Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It also argues that Ankara’s regional engagement goes beyond ethnic connections, emphasizing broader historical and cultural links.

Soft power strategy highlighted

Kathimerini stated that Türkiye is making full use of its historical, cultural, religious and educational ties to project soft power throughout the Balkans.

The newspaper noted that these initiatives are also visible in areas where Turkish communities or minorities do not receive official recognition.

Western Thrace Turks referenced

The report also cited statements by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the rights of the Western Thrace Turkish community.

It recalled Erdoğan’s pledge that Türkiye would continue to stand by the Western Thrace Turkish minority and support the community in addressing its concerns.

Albania cited as a strategic example

Kathimerini described Albania as an example of Türkiye’s regional influence, noting that although the Turkish minority is not officially recognized there, Ankara maintains strategic influence in the country.

The report also referred to defense cooperation between the two countries, recalling that the Turkish Navy has held usage rights at the Pasha Liman naval base since 1992. It further highlighted Albania’s procurement of Bayraktar TB2 unmanned aerial vehicles as part of its defense partnership with Türkiye.
