Public-sector workers stage stoppage over constitutional changes
Public-sector workers in the Athens area will stage a work stoppage Wednesday to protest proposed constitutional changes as Parliament holds its second vote on the revision.
The stoppage, called by the umbrella civil servants’ union ADEDY, will run from noon until the end of the workday. A protest rally is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Syntagma Square.
Union raises job protection concerns
ADEDY opposes proposed changes it says could weaken job protections for civil servants under Article 103 of the Constitution.
The union also objects to proposed changes to Article 16 on education and what it describes as broader changes affecting the public sector.
Pay demands add to protests
The mobilization is also linked to wage demands. ADEDY says measures announced by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Thessaloniki International Fair failed to meet public-sector workers’ demands for higher pay.
The union is calling for permanent employment, higher wages and free public education and health care.
Further mobilizations planned
ADEDY will meet with public-sector unions Thursday to discuss further action and economic, institutional and social security demands.
The union has also backed demonstrations marking the anniversary of the 2013 killing of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas.
ADEDY has designated Oct. 1 as a nationwide day of action and says it plans to hold a strike later in October.
