Protest against Rubio visit held in central Athens
An anti-war protest against the visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Greece was held in central Athens on Tuesday evening, with student associations, trade unions and political parties taking part.
Demonstrators gathered at the Propylaea on Panepistimiou Street before marching toward the US Embassy. Police prevented the protesters from reaching the embassy, and the rally ended peacefully.
Similar anti-war demonstrations were also held in Thessaloniki.
Police imposed extensive traffic measures
Authorities imposed temporary traffic restrictions across central Athens in connection with Rubio’s visit and the planned demonstrations.
Road closures and diversions affected key routes around Syntagma Square, including Vasilissis Sofias Avenue, Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue, Vasilissis Amalias Avenue, Panepistimiou Street and Stadiou Street.
Police said additional restrictions were introduced depending on conditions and urged motorists to avoid travelling by car in central Athens and use public transport instead.
Drivers who entered the area were asked to follow instructions from traffic officers stationed at key points.
Restrictions continued during Rubio visit
The traffic measures began on Tuesday afternoon and remained in place until Thursday morning, October 8, with the most extensive restrictions imposed on Wednesday, October 7, when Rubio’s official programme continued in Athens.
Police had also announced a 24-hour ban on public outdoor gatherings in central Athens from 6 a.m. Wednesday, including vehicle convoys, as part of security measures related to the US secretary of state’s visit.
Following the conclusion of Tuesday evening’s demonstration, roads affected by the protest restrictions were gradually reopened to traffic shortly before 9 p.m.
