Teachers, along with university and high school students are planning a series of actions on Tuesday and Wednesday in Greece’s main cities to protest the rising cost of living, the lack of housing, low wages and to support of public education.

Action will start at 6 pm today when students will gather at Syntagma square. Protesters are planning to set up camp as they rally against shortcomings in education, and problems with school infrastructure.

On Wednesday, the union representing Greek primary school teachers, known by its acronym DOE, has called for a 24-hour strike union, supported by public school teachers (OLME). Educators are demanding salary increases, the filling of vacancies for teaching and support staff, safe school buildings, and the strengthening of free public education.

They will be joined by student groups who are planning nationwide rallies. In Athens, school and university students as well as educators will gather at noon at the Propylaea, while in Thessaloniki, the meeting is set for 11.30 am at the Venizelos statue. In Patra, protesters will rally at 10.30 am at Georgiou Square., while in Crete, gatherings are planned in Iraklio at 10 am, and two hours later in Hania and Rethymno.
