Greece’s smaller political parties are entering a critical phase as they battle to pass the 3% threshold required for parliamentary representation, a contest that could prove decisive for government formation after the next election.

Voice of Reason, MeRA25, Niki, the Movement for Democracy and the New Left are all polling close to the entry line. The fewer parties that make it into parliament, the lower the effective seat threshold for the leading party to secure an outright majority of 151 seats.

According to a recent Pulse poll, the five parties together account for around 11% of vote intention, with Voice of Reason at 3%, MeRA25 at 2.5%, Niki and the Movement for Democracy at 2% each, and the New Left at 1.5%.

The landscape is expected to become even more crowded with the possible emergence of new political formations linked to former prime minister Alexis Tsipras and Tempe rail disaster activist Maria Karystianou. Party leaders have already sharpened their rhetoric in an effort to stand out.

MeRA25 leader Yanis Varoufakis drew controversy with comments about past drug use, triggering political backlash and legal scrutiny, while Voice of Reason leader Afroditi Latinopoulou is seeking to build on her party’s 3.04% showing in the European elections.

Karystianou’s potential entry is increasing pressure on Stefanos Kasselakis’s Movement for Democracy, as the New Left continues to debate whether to pursue an independent path or seek alliances ahead of the vote.
