PASOK and ELAS in battle for second place ahead of Greek election
Greece’s main opposition parties, PASOK and ELAS, are increasingly focused on securing second place in the upcoming election, as opinion polls continue to show a strong lead for ruling New Democracy.
PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis and ELAS leader Alexis Tsipras both insist their parties aim to win the election, despite polling gaps that make overtaking New Democracy unlikely.
Polls show wide gap
In a recent Pulse survey for Skai, New Democracy led with 25.5% of voting intention, followed by ELAS at 13.5% and PASOK at 10%.
Against this backdrop, the contest for second place has taken on heightened political importance.
Strategic stakes for opposition
The party finishing second is expected to play a leading role in shaping any future progressive coalition against New Democracy, particularly in the event of a repeat election.
Failure to secure second place could weaken a party’s influence within the broader opposition, potentially reshaping Greece’s political balance.
