Poll shows New Democracy maintaining lead despite strong desire for political change

Greece's ruling New Democracy party maintains a comfortable lead over its rivals, according to a new opinion poll, despite a strong majority of voters expressing a desire for a change of government after the next parliamentary elections.

The survey, conducted by GPO for Star television, projected support for New Democracy at 28.6%, ahead of former prime minister Alexis Tsipras' newly established ELAS party at 15.1%. The Socialist PASOK party followed with 12.4%, while Maria Karystianou's newly formed Hope for Democracy was projected at 10.5%.

Majority want different government

Despite the governing party's lead, 69.1% of respondents said they would prefer a different administration after two consecutive terms under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Only 27.5% said they wanted New Democracy to remain in power.

Mixed views on new political movements

The poll found that ELAS has quickly emerged as the strongest opposition force, though public sentiment toward the party remains divided. Some 65.6% of respondents expressed negative or fairly negative views of the new formation, compared with 32.6% who viewed it positively.

Hope for Democracy also received mixed reactions, with 62.4% expressing negative opinions and 33.6% positive ones.

According to the survey, three additional parties — two on the left and one on the right — are projected to surpass the 3% threshold required for parliamentary representation.
