Ottoman-era Orta Mosque and Double Bath restored in Karaferye (Veria)
Two historic buildings dating from the Ottoman period have been restored in Veria, bringing important elements of the city's multicultural architectural heritage back into focus.
A ceremony marking the completion of restoration works at Orta Mosque and the Double Bath (Çifte Hamam) was held on Wednesday, September 2, in the presence of Greek officials, local representatives and invited guests.
The event was attended by Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, officials from the Imathia Antiquities Service, local authorities, members of parliament and other guests. Serkan Gedik, Türkiye's Consul General in Thessaloniki, also attended the ceremony.
During the event, speakers highlighted the importance of the two buildings to Veria's historical identity and stressed the value of preserving Ottoman-era monuments as part of the city's multilayered cultural heritage.
Orta Mosque dates back to the 15th century
Orta Mosque is considered one of the significant surviving Ottoman monuments in Veria. The building dates to the late 15th century and is located in the city's historic center.
Restoration works included maintenance, repairs and structural interventions in various parts of the building.
Work was also carried out on the dome, minaret, flooring and plaster, while efforts were made to preserve the building's original architectural elements and historic character.
Historic Double Bath restored
The Double Bath, another important Ottoman-era monument in Veria, has also undergone restoration.
The building takes its name from its two separate sections, which were traditionally used as separate bathing areas for women and men during the Ottoman period.
Historic wall decorations and architectural features characteristic of the period remain among the elements contributing to the building's cultural significance.
Following the completion of the restoration projects, participants were given guided tours of both monuments during the ceremony.
Officials from the Imathia Antiquities Service provided information about the buildings' historical characteristics and the restoration work carried out to preserve them for future generations.
The restoration of Orta Mosque and the Double Bath represents another step in preserving Veria's Ottoman architectural heritage and highlighting the city's diverse historical layers.
