Athens rrolls out smart traffic cameras to enforce road rules and improve safety

A major digital upgrade to traffic enforcement is underway in Athens, where hundreds of new “smart” cameras are being installed to automatically detect and record traffic violations. The initiative is part of Greece’s broader effort to modernize road safety and curb dangerous driving behaviors.
As of now, 41 smart cameras have been deployed across 17 municipalities in the Athens metropolitan area. By 2026, that number is expected to surpass 500, with installations focused on high-traffic intersections and accident-prone areas throughout Attica.
Automated monitoring for speeding, red lights, phone use
Operating 24/7, the cameras are capable of automatically identifying a range of common traffic violations, including:
Running red lights
Speeding
Using mobile phones while driving
Failing to wear seatbelts or motorcycle helmets
Once a violation is recorded, images and footage are sent to the Traffic Management Center for verification. After confirmation, a fine notice is issued and delivered either by mail or digitally through the government portal gov.gr.
Digital responsibility transfer for vehicle owners
In cases where the vehicle owner is not the driver at the time of the offense, the system allows for online declaration of the actual driver, enabling digital transfer of the fine to the responsible individual.
Authorities stress that the smart cameras offer high accuracy, and contesting a recorded violation will require solid evidence.
A step forward in road safety
The new system is part of Greece’s updated Highway Code enforcement strategy, aiming to make roads safer through technology and accountability. Officials say that consistent surveillance and faster penalty processing are expected to deter reckless driving and help reduce road accidents across Athens.
The smart camera rollout is one of several initiatives planned under the country’s push for digital modernization in public services and infrastructure.
