Over 2,700 helmet violations recorded across Greece
Greek police recorded more than 2,700 violations for failing to wear a helmet during the 60th week of the nationwide “Zero tolerance for riding without a helmet” campaign.
Between Aug. 17 and 23, authorities carried out 22,012 checks on motorcycle and moped riders and passengers, users of light personal electric vehicles and ATV drivers.
A total of 2,520 violations were recorded among drivers and 228 among passengers. Of the violations involving drivers, 1,595 concerned two-wheeled vehicles, 822 involved light personal electric vehicles and 98 involved ATVs. Fifty-eight violations involved delivery workers.
Attica records most violations
Attica recorded the highest number of violations, with 939, followed by the South Aegean with 639 and the Ionian Islands with 364.
Crete recorded 190 violations, Western Greece 146 and Thessaloniki 148. In Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, 43 violations were recorded.
Tougher penalties in force
Under Greece’s new Road Traffic Code, motorcycle and moped drivers who fail to wear a helmet face a €350 fine and a 30-day driving license suspension.
The same penalties apply to drivers who fail to ensure that their passengers wear helmets, while passengers face a €350 fine.
Drivers of light personal electric vehicles face a €30 fine. Penalties increase significantly for repeat offenses.
Greek police said the campaign is aimed not only at imposing fines but at changing road behavior and making certified helmet use universal.
“The helmet is not simply an accessory – it is a responsibility that saves lives,” the police said.
