Seven Bulgarian fans arrested ahead of AEK-Levski clash
Greek police arrested seven Bulgarian nationals on Wednesday in connection with illegal possession of weapons ahead of the Champions League match between AEK Athens and Levski Sofia.
Six of the arrests were made at toll stations in Attica, while another Bulgarian national was detained at the Promahonas border crossing as authorities tightened security ahead of the match in Athens.
Knives found at Attica toll stations
Four Levski Sofia supporters were arrested at the Afidnes toll station in northeastern Attica during checks on vehicles traveling toward Athens.
Police searching their vehicle found and confiscated two folding knives.
Two more Bulgarian nationals were arrested at the Elefsina toll station in western Attica after officers found another knife during a search.
The six detainees were taken before the police Subdivision for Managing Organised Sports Violence. Authorities filed cases against them for alleged violations of legislation concerning weapons possession and sports-related offenses.
Fan detained at Promahonas
A 29-year-old Bulgarian national was arrested at the Promahonas border station in northern Greece after police found a knife, a truncheon and pepper spray in his possession.
The man was traveling in a van with other Levski supporters. He reportedly told police that he did not have a ticket for the match and intended to purchase one before kickoff.
A case was filed against him at the Sidirokastro police station for alleged violation of Greece's weapons possession law.
The arrests came as Greek authorities carried out heightened checks at border crossings, toll stations and other points on the national road network ahead of the highly anticipated Champions League encounter.
